A 2021 study by the Department of Public Health In Philadelphia, shows chronic male unemployment is the main driver of gun violence.

Providing jobs (along with therapy) = a solution to address this crisis.

Unfortunately job discrimination and criminal records (stemming from the War on Drugs) and underfunded and understaffed schools, keep many men from low income communities out of work.

During his final book and last year of his life, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. advocated for a Guaranteed Job Program to address unemployment in low-income communities.

He said :

“New forms of work that enhance the social good will have to be devised for those for whom traditional jobs are not available.”

The CEO, Addison Sarter has worked in the human service industry for 11 years, and knows the perfect type of jobs that could be created to “enhance the social good” and be created for those “whom traditional jobs are not available”

Target area: A low-income, public housing building affected by gun violence.

Participants: Men who have been impacted by the criminal justice system , will be paid and trained to provide wellness checks on seniors who live in their building.

They will also receive mental health counseling every month.

Other duties would consist of helping to take senior citizens to doctor’s appointments, helping them apply for Medicaid, food stamps and social security etc, and leading activities for youth who live in the building (basketball, football, etc.).

The political climate and uncertainty in America, is why now perfect time to support and care for our elderly population in DC.

Target group: individuals at high risk for gun violence, who have been impacted by the criminal justice system .

25-34 is the age range most likely to be arrested for shootings but the program will also include teenagers as young as 14 years old.

According to the Gun Violence Problem Analysis Summary Report in DC, released in 2021 by the National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform Between 200-500 people are driving the gun violence in DC

78-86% of shooting suspects in DC had criminal records prior to the shooting they were arrested for.

Yes, “not everybody can be saved” nor does this organization claim gun violence will miraculously end. We DO believe, providing jobs and mental health counseling to those who are most at risk for gun violence, can dramatically reduce gun violence in DC.
