PhD in Animal Behavior
A native and life-long resident of Virginia, Dr. Caryn Self Sullivan has traced her ancestors back to the 1600s with connections to the Patawomeck Tribe, England, Ireland, and Wales. She grew up in Fredericksburg VA, attended Ferry Farm Elementary, Gayle Middle, Stafford and James Monroe High Schools. She holds a B.S. in Marine Science from Coastal Carolina University (1997), and a Ph.D. in Animal Behavior from Texas A&M (2008).
Her academic career started late. After raising 3 children she enrolled in college for the 1st time at age 39. Dr. Caryn and her research partner, Dr. Katherine S. LaCommare, co-founded Sirenian International and the Earthwatch Manatees & Dolphins in Belize Research Project in 1999 after hours of searching for and watching manatees from the bow of a small research boat in Belize in 1998.

Caryn’s research career has taken her around the world, working and living in Australia, Ghana, Belize, the Dominican Republic, Japan, Massachusetts, Florida, Texas, and Georgia. She has authored or co-authored dozens of papers published in peer reviewed journals, official reports, books, and magazines. She served on the faculty of Georgia Southern University (2008-2010), Virginia Tech (2010), and Nova Southeastern University (2011-2016). Caryn says her greatest accomplishment has been mentoring young scientists, especially young women focused on animal behavior.
Dr. Caryn returned to Virginia to care for her mother in 2010. She continued to teach and mentor graduate students via distance and started her Private Personalized Training and Behavior Modification Business for Dogs. She graduated from the Karen Pryor Academy in 2011, and holds Certifications & Memberships from multiple Professional Animal Behavior Organizations including KPA CTP, IAABC, PPG, AVSAB, CPDT, AKC, APDT, OS, FPPE, CSAT, and TAGteach. Caryn currently lives in Colonial Beach where she owns and operates Ask Dr. Caryn and Beach Paws Boutique. She is active in her local community, serving on the Colonial Beach Town Council (2020-2024) and the Board of Directors for multiple charities including Colonial Beach Rivah Dogs, Colonial Beach Humane Society, Neighbor2Neighbor, WWER 88.1 Community Radio, Friends of Eleanor Park, and Coming to the Table CBVA.
